Chapter Eleven
Iâd been dragged down six feet before I came to my senses, realized that Kane had pulled me clear of the rear seats, and as the reality of my situation hit me, I kicked hard with my legs, pushing free of the wreckage and heading for the vague light at the surface which told me which direction was up.
My lungs were burning, and I knew Iâd already taken too much water on board, and didnât have long left; but soon I was at the surface, breaking through into the air above, opening my mouth and coughing up a mouthful of water before taking a deep, life-giving breath.
But the surface wasnât much better than underneath, the storm delivering Biblical levels of rain down on us; the waves were rolling high, and I wasnât sure if Iâd still drown despite being rescued from the sinking plane.
The world around me was hazy and indistinct, and I wasnât sure how much of that was from the effect the crash had on me, and how much was from the storm, reducing visibility to almost nothing.
I looked around for Kane, started to panic when I didnât see him. Had he helped me, only to be caught somehow inside the wreckage? But then he popped up right next to me, one strap of my backpack in between his teeth.
Good boy.
Released from its position behind the chairs, the backpack was buoyant now, and I put my arms on it, resting my upper chest there, head clear of the water. I went to grab Kane, to get him to rest his paws there in a similar fashion, but he was already swimming away. I followed his lead, doing my best to ignore the wind and rain that buffeted me, legs kicking hard underneath the cold water, pushing me forward. Again, I was lucky it wasnât winter, or I wouldnât last more than a few minutes in the water. As it was, it was unpleasant but survivable â for now, at least. But where the hell was land?
I thought I saw it then, through the mist and torrential rain â a vague outline of something to my right, a slightly different shade of grey to what I thought might be the water and the sky. But we werenât headed that way, and a moment later I realized why, as the floating backpack bumped against something. I looked, saw that it was one of the Cessnaâs wings, broken off and bobbing along with the wind-swept waves. Beyond that, I could see the remnants of the front portion of the aircraft, just slipping below the water.
I looked around for the two men, couldnât see them anywhere, and I immediately abandoned the backpack and dove underneath the surface once more, swimming with powerful strokes towards the sinking fuselage. Bad guys they might be, but I didnât want them dying that way. Besides which, I needed information from them, and if they were dead, they wouldnât be able to tell me much.
I got there just seconds later, climbed through the shattered interior to the cockpit.
